Rental Car Ridealongs: Sue from Pinetown

Sue Chabalala lived in a store-top apartment in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal – above a general dealer that doubled as a laundromat. The constant buzz of traffic and pavement chatter was something to get used to, but Sue loved her home all the same.

Sue worked as a receptionist for an IT company situated in Hillcrest, and she loved every second of it. She had learnt so much about computer systems and networking in the two years since she started there, and would often dream of building her own computer setup – with all the bells and whistles.

Once a month, she’d travel to her parents’ smallholding and take them money. They still lived in rural KZN; an acre of land just outside of Ladysmith. They were old; too old to work and earn themselves a decent wage. Regardless, they didn’t need for much, as Sue quickly found out when first suggesting she supplement their income.

Their pension was barely enough to cover their medical expenses each month – Sue’s dad had diabetes – but they got by on the few Rands earned from selling their homegrown fruit and vegetables at the market. It was the weekend Sue needed to travel by taxi to Ladysmith, to see her parents and take them a few groceries. Life, however, had other plans for her.

A Rental Car is Needed

Sue arrived home from work at around 5:40 p.m. It was Friday, meaning there were only a few minutes remaining before the Quantum minibus would arrive – with trailer in tow – and take her, along with the other passengers squeezed in like sardines, to northern KwaZulu-Natal.

She packed her bag, gathered her parents’ grocery packets, changed into something comfortable for the trip, and poured herself a glass of Coke. She had sipped about half before she heard a knock at the door.

‘Sue, it’s my taxi! They stole the wheels,’ was the first thing she heard when she opened her apartment door. Herman, the driver, held his hands over his face in horror.

This wasn’t good news for her trip at all! Her parents would be expecting her, worrying themselves sick until they heard from her again. They owned no cellular phones, so letting them know would be rather difficult.

‘Here, call these guys. I always use their rental cars when I move house.’ The taxi driver, still standing in Sue’s doorway, handed her a blue and white business card. It had the letters HBH printed on its face, with a list of contact details on the flipside.

Sue took a deep breath, carefully dialled the first number on the card, and raised her smart phone to her ear. She needed a miracle; someone who could come through for her.

Within minutes a rental car had been organised for Sue, and it was on its way to her location. It was a white Toyota Corolla 1.6 Quest, and the call agent said it was an absolute dream to drive long distance.

Sue believed him when first seeing the rental car pulling up to her side of the road. She could tell it was freshly washed, as it shone under the yellow glow of the streetlights.

A man stepped out of the driver’s side door, smiling from ear to ear. They filled in some paperwork on the bonnet (taking care not to scratch the car’s paint work), and exchanged contact numbers in case of emergency. He handed her the keys, wished her a safe journey, and walked to the corner where he was pickup up by a colleague.

Finally alone, Sue could feel the excitement of her upcoming road trip building within her. She packed her bag into the rental car’s boot, placed the packets on the back seat, got behind the wheel and was on her way to a much-needed weekend at her parents – glad for the excuse to carry her driver’s license once again.
