Raj Naidoo lived on a quiet street in Chatsworth, Durban, with his girlfriend and her two children. As far as car fundis go, Raj must have been royalty.
His collection of cars spread across their front and back yards, and featured four-wheeled vehicles from every decade since the 1940s.
They were all ‘fix-me-uppers’, each a project Raj vowed to complete sooner rather than later. The only car that was actually operational was his two-door 1995 VW Golf Sport – and it was Raj’s pride and joy.
In metallic red, Raj’s jalopy was the envy of the entire neighbourhood. He’d start her in the mornings, and neighbours’ coffee mugs would rattle on their bedsides.
In a sad twist of fate, on the morning of his nephew’s 13th birthday party, Raj’s ride decided to grumble no more – leaving him without transport and without the means to visit his adored nephew on his birthday.
Raj woke up and immediately thought about his nephew. He couldn’t believe that little Jo’Ash was already becoming a teenager. After taking a shower and grabbing his nephew’s birthday present from the closet, he walked out to the VW that slept under the carport.
He placed the gift into the boot and got into the driver’s seat. It was a Saturday morning, and he cringed as he slotted the key into the ignition. His neighbours were about to be unceremoniously woken up. He turned the key and heard the death clicks that indicated a dead car battery.
Raj closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He looked around his property and realised the sad irony of his chosen hobby. All of those cars, and not a single one can take him to his nephew’s birthday celebration.
He returned to his bedroom where his girlfriend was still sleeping; blissfully unaware of the vehicular issue her boyfriend was facing. He decided not to wake her and instead sifted through the contents of his bedside drawer for a blue and white business card he had spotted earlier that week.
He found it, and in bold black letters was the telephone number for the Pinetown branch of Highway Bakkie Hire. He called and held his breath as the phone rang once. twice.. three times.
Before the fourth ring, a jovial voice wished Raj a good morning and asked how they could assist. He explained the situation to the sales lady who then proceeded to explain the Highway Bakkie Hire rental process.
Raj managed to catch a taxi to Pinetown and was delighted when the driver offered to drop him right in front of the Highway Bakkie Hire offices. Raj had a choice of five different rental vehicles and opted for the VW Polo 1.4 hatch.
After paying his deposit and providing proof of a valid driver’s license, Raj was free to drive off in his rental car which seemed to be in immaculate condition.
Raj decided to take a slow drive to his sister’s house in Durban North, and his fellow party attendees couldn’t believe that he had been stranded without transportation only a few hours earlier.
