South Africa has 3000km of coastline stretching from the Namibian border through the Cape and the Garden Route and then extending north to the Mozambican frontier. Along the way, there is a world of towns, cities, sights and sounds to be experienced. In a two-week road trip, you could spend your time exploring a small area, or you could take a whirlwind tour around the whole coast. Highway Bakkie Hire suggests a coastal road trip itinerary to help you enjoy our beautiful coastline.
Whether you want to stop frequently and focus on a few key destinations, or enjoy the sights from the road, the South African coastline has plenty to offer. Here’s an itinerary suggestion for a road trip you can take in 2021. Of course, there are plenty of other ways you could explore the coast and interior of the country, but this is a good way to start. Take a look at our blog for more motoring advice.

The coastline that extends from Durban down through KZN, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape features some of the most beautiful, fun and fascinating attractions this country has to offer. For a great road trip, you couldn’t do much better than starting your trip in Durban and then heading south along the N2. You will pass through the South Coast, the wonders of the Wild Coast, spend some time in East London and Port Elizabeth before heading through the Garden Route on the way to Cape Town. You could end the trip in the Mother City before turning back or, if you have time, you could carry on up the West Coast, which will feel like a different country, in many ways, from what you have just experienced.
Where you stop along this route and how long you spend at each stop will depend on what you find most interesting. Maybe you want to spend a few nights in the virtually untouched (for now) Wild Coast, or perhaps you want to explore the Eastern Cape’s two main cities. Maybe the gorgeous forest of Knysna or the Cape Winelands could be your focal point. You decide.
As a way to divide up your trip, remember that the journey from Durban to Cape Town along the N2 is 1643km (more than half of the country’s total coastline). If you were to drive it in a single trip it would take you about a day. With that in mind, you can divide up your driving sessions and stopping times and think about how long you want to stay in the various places. No matter what decision you make, this is guaranteed to be a magical trip! WE recommend taking 2-weeks to enjoy this stunning road trip. This will give you a chance to experience a bit of everything.
Highway Bakkie Hire is committed to offering well-serviced, quality vehicles that will see you safely and enjoyably through your South African road trip.
